FBI: Va. man threatened Harris, others online

AWinchester, Virginia, man who authorities said made thousands of posts and replies in online forums threatening various public officials had his initial court hearing in U.S. District Court in Roanoke on Monday.

Frank Lucio Carrillo, 66,is charged with one count of making threats against the vice president of the United States. Federal prosecutors said in a statement that investigators found 4,359 posts and replies made by Carillo using the name joemadarats1 thattargeted President Joseph Biden, Vice President Kamala Harris and FBI Director Christopher Wray, among others.

Gladys West, 91, of King George County, was hired in 1956 by the U.S. Navy as amathematician on computer programming and coding at theNaval Proving Ground in Dahlgren. Among her projects was anastronomical study that proved the regularity of Pluto's motion relative to Neptune and the creation ofalgorithms that formed the basis for GPS.

"I think that Dr. West is another one of those hidden figures in our military that play a critical role in the advancements that not only affected our ability to fire missiles accurately but also enable everyday life when you pick up your phone and you're trying to find something," said retired Navy Rear Adm. Sinclair Harris during an awards ceremony for West in 2023.

Gladys West Elementary School will be the new name of the current Walker-Grant Middle School. That name will transfer to a new middle school expected to open next year.

Lindsey Burke of Fairfax, director of theCenter for Education Policy at the Heritage Foundation, co-authored the education chapter of the 920-page plan, which was written as a blueprint for governing if former President Donald Trump wins election in November.Among the recommendations is shuttering theU.S. Education Department, privatizing student loans andoverhauling diversity, inclusion and equity programs.
